The 2018 Merrill Master's

Uncle and Niece Neck and Neck after 36 Holes: Making History in the 2018 Merrill Cup

On September 8th, 2018, the last day of the 7th annual Merrill Master’s Cup commenced. An elite group of four golfers had worked their way into the lead. Early in the morning Paul Ogden, Frank Patrick, Peter Martin, and Maddie Merrill took off in four separate golf carts. Each hoped to earn both fame and glory; having their name inscribed on the notorious Merrill Cup Trophy.

As the first eighteen holes neared the end, Paul lead the group by a single stroke. Content to let fate work her magic Paul headed in to rest as Maddie went out to improve her score. Despite off and on rain and lightning warnings Maddie was determined to complete another eighteen holes, totaling thirty-six holes by 3:00pm. After many more grueling hours on the golf course with no break for food or even a mojito Maddie walked off the course holding the lead. This was a truly impressive feat considering she was required to take a whopping three stroke handicap (as decided by the chairman of the board).

Watching from his balcony just above the driving range Paul Ogden’s eyes glimmered with a competitive twinkle. Loading up the cooler and swinging his golf bag over his shoulder Paul headed back out to the course. Maddie was quick to follow.

The two chased one another through the rain for another eighteen holes, bringing Pauls total to thirty-six and Maddie’s to fifty-four! The two focused on their honing their game, both pushing one another to play some of the best golf the Merrill Cup has ever seen. As they came upon the eighteenth hole crowds gathered eagerly awaiting the final scores. Paul Ogden howled as he “let the big dog eat”, making his way down the fairway with Maddie hot on his tail.

Shaking hands on the green, the two exchanged scores. Ultimately, when handicaps were taken into account, Paul Ogden maintained his title as the Merrill Cup champion, three overall titles and two consecutive championships. And while the announcement was exciting, it was the tradition of the tournament and the moments spent together over the past week that gave these final moments of the tournament a beautiful melancholia feel as the two embraced. Both players walked off the green knowing they would return to challenge one another the following year.

2018 Merrill Cup Most Attended in History

RSVP’s to the 2018 Merrill Master’s poured in this year. The numbers were unlike anything the Cup had witnessed before. And while the chairman of the board was surely astonished perhaps the most surprised (and likely also horrified) of all were the Grande Vista staff and guests as they stood watching somewhere between twenty-five and thirty people howl on the steps of the Copa Loca.

Experts predict the Cup will only grow in size in the coming years. As a new player in the Merrill Cup the chairman of the board will keep a watchful eye on your game in order to determine your handicap in the years to cup. It is also suggested you read the Patron Info page so as to familiarize yourself with Merrill Master’s Cup etiquette.

The Merrill Master’s is still a relatively young cup but that has in no way limited the excitement felt the moment you arrive at your tee time on game day. You will have to come see it for yourself.

Megan Schueppert makes First Hole in One at the 2018 Merrill Cup

Pictured: Megan holding the hole in one golf ball and club.

Megan Schueppert, daughter of founding sibling Mary Chantelle Merrill, made the tournaments first ever hole in one. She did so on the eighth hole with an iron. Shocked and excited she immediately texted her family members who were on different holes. Few believed Megan until her story was confirmed by the four other Merrill Cup participants who were in her group that day.

It is estimated that an average golf player has a 1 in 12,000 chance of making a hole in one at any given point in their career. Megan's feat was truly impressive not just in the Merrill Cup but in the game of golf overall.

Chasing Ogden into 2019

Ogden. The Man. The myth. The Legend.

As we look towards the 2019 Merrill Master's Cup, one question lingers in everyones mind; Will Frank finally adjust Paul Ogden's handicap?
Though we may not have this question answered until next September we have come to form many possible hypothesis to explain Pauls good fortune. Here are some:

1. Paul really really loves golf

2. His swaggy outfits bring him good luck

3. His brightly colored hair blinds his opponents giving him an advantage

4. He temporarily embodies Tiger Woods on the course

5. He drinks less than the other players on the course giving him an advantage

It's hard to say which is most likely but regardless we all hope to find out as we chase Odgen into 2019.
